Despite the Nightmare Arm only having three large fingers, it didn't seem to hinder his combat abilities at all. Siegfried's body was slowly being mutated by the sword's terrible power, causing his right arm to morph into a hideous claw. This was also the first appearance of the Nightmare Arm. His red armour was changed to a dark blue armor and its design turned more metallic instead of fleshy. In Soulcalibur, the concept was expanded and turned into an official character, though with changes to the design. He emerges from the blade and fights Siegfried, only to be defeated.
Nightmare appears when Siegfried attempts to seal Soul Edge. Oddly, he uses the same voice actor as Siegfried. He has no story nor ending, and only used Siegfried's Soul Edge without effects. This early version was very different from the current Nightmare, having crimson-red armor and a more flesh-like design with the mutated "Nightmare Arm" being less pronounced and being the left one instead of the right one. Siegfried! was an alternate version of normal Siegfried taken from his no-input ending, in which he is consumed by Soul Edge. An extra character named Siegfried! was added as an unlockable character. Nightmare, known as Siegfried! in Soul Edge (Soul Blade).Įven though Nightmare originally debuted in Soulcalibur, there was a "prototype" of his character in Soul Blade. In Soulcalibur V's promotional material he is referred to as The Symbol of Destruction. What lies in his soul is Damnation and Destruction. The New Legends of Project Soul artbook implies this host was Raphael Sorel, a malfested French noblemen who woud go extreme lengths to appease his foster daughter Amy and who died after the events of Soulcalibur IV, stating that Soul Edge had the body's memories altered as an experiment to see if it could claim a new host while keeping its preferred physical form. The third character to act as Soul Edge's host and become the Azure Night, was the last host of Soul Edge in the Original Timeline, who uses the alias " Graf Dumas". The second character to act as the Azure Knight, was Soul Edge's will itself: Inferno, who animated the armor after Siegfried broke free from Soul Edge's control.
